AMALIA HERNANDEZ’ BALLET FOLKLÓRICO DE MÉXICO
60TH ANNIVERSARY
The Ballet Folklórico de México is to the dancing traditions of Mexico as the Moiseyev is to Russian folk dance: the gold standard. Founded in 1952 by dancer and choreographer Amalia Hernández, the company’s repertoire now encompasses more than 70 ballets and folk dances, performed by a company of 30 accompanied by a live mariachi band. The ritualistic Deer Dance of the Yaqui Indians has become the troupe’s signature work, and you haven’t seen the Mexican Hat Dance (or Jalisco) until you’ve seen it danced by the Folklórico.
