Your Support Is Critical

A Message from Artistic Director, Emily Mann

When I arrived at McCarter in 1990, I knew I had come to a remarkable place — a town and region that values, appreciates and supports the arts. Through the intervening years the incredible support of the community, our Board of Trustees, our staff and partners at Princeton University has allowed McCarter the freedom to pursue our mission to create and produce great works for the American stage.

About McCarter

Excellence, Community & Innovation

EXCELLENCE

McCarter is a major cultural center. Housing both a producing theatre and a robust presented event series within a single organization makes McCarter unique among other performing arts organizations.

COMMUNITY

McCarter plays a significant role in the civic life of our region. By creating a place where people can gather to hear and experience each other's stories, we sustain and enrich our community.

INNOVATION

For decades, McCarter has made it a priority to introduce innovative and promising new talent to our audiences in both the Theater and Presented Series.

The Case for Support

The price of excellence is high — especially in the arts. McCarter has been providing the highest quality programming in Princeton for decades and is a recognized leader in its field.

Our audiences expect and appreciate the quality of our work, demonstrating their incredible support through ticket sales, subscriptions and donations. While it is greatly appreciated, that support alone is not enough to sustain our organization.

McCarter Theatre Center faces the economic realities common to all arts organizations in this time of changing cultural practices. The pace of modern life is hectic and former ticket buying patterns have given way to new behaviors. People can access cultural content in many ways which has had a profound impact on our business model. We believe that despite these cultural shifts, the magic of a live performance will always have the power to transfix an audience through a shared experience.

McCarter is committed to creating and presenting world-class theater and presented events for the engagement, education and entertainment of our community. This level of achievement and the breadth of the work we do make our financial needs particularly pressing.

Make a Gift

Your gift to the Campaign for McCarter — whether directed to the Endowment Fund or Annual Fund, or to both — is your way to personally ensure that McCarter will remain a vibrant, meaningful and enriching theater for our entire community well into the future.

Annual Fund gifts are used to support the current general operations of the Theatre. Endowment gifts may be directed to McCarter Theatre Center's General Endowment Fund or to a specific area of our work which you wish to support. We would be delighted to speak with you about the purpose and structure of your gift.

Gifts to McCarter Theatre's Endowment Funds are the best way to support McCarter's future and to ensure it will be a vital contributor to the civic life of our region for decades to come. You may choose one from among the following endowment funds to support.

GENERAL ENDOWMENT FUND

The annual distribution from this fund is for the unrestricted use by the Theatre as determined by the Board of Trustees.

THEATER SERIES
FUND

The annual distribution from this fund will support all aspects of the Theater Series, including the McCarter Lab program which oversees play readings, new play commissions and play development.

PRESENTED EVENTS FUND

The annual distribution from this fund will support presented artist events at McCarter, including partially underwriting the cost of bringing new performers to McCarter, commissioning new works in the areas of dance and music and supporting audience engagement and enrichment activities.

AUDIENCE ACCESS PROGRAMS FUND

The annual distribution from this fund will support audience access programs at McCarter. These programs include our hearing assistance systems, our Driven to Excellence program which brings local seniors to special matinees, our audio described performances, specially designed performances for those on the autism spectrum, and many other service enhancements to ensure that community members can engage in the live theater experience with ease and dignity.

EDUCATION & ENGAGEMENT FUND

The annual distribution from this fund will support our high-impact arts education and engagement program that reaches tens of thousands of students and seniors in our area. Trenton, South Brunswick and Ewing are some of the underserved school districts that have benefited through subsidized student matinees, in-school residencies and workshops.

EMERGING LEADERS FUND

The annual distribution from this fund will support our emerging leaders through our Internship Program and other professional support of early career theater artists and administrators.
