Silvère Boureau spent his childhood in Brittany and his twenties in Paris. He attended Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués in Roubaix, France, and studied graphic arts, art history, theater, and painting at Université Paris VIII. When he came to the U.S. from France in 1982, he was primarily an expressionist painter of the human form, departing slightly from his father’s (Andre Boureau) style of abstract painting and sculpture.
However, the discovery of the American landscape opened a new vision on painting and he sought to experience the wilderness first hand: “To stand on a mountain and look as far as the eye can see without encountering any mark of human intervention remains exhilarating—this doesn’t happen in Europe. I paint ‘en plein air’, sketch, or take a photograph and then paint a larger picture in my studio. My intention is to capture and render the spirit of the place with minimal interpretation.”
In addition to walls and canvas, Silvère paints on furniture and folding screens. Both his decorative and landscape painting can be seen at many public venues and private homes throughout New York City, Philadelphia, and Princeton, NJ. His corporate commissions include Mellon Bank of New York, Tiffany’s New York, House Beautiful Magazine, and The Tap Room at the Nassau Inn, Princeton.
